Golf scoring apps compared (2026)

Five ways to keep score for a golf society, a club roll-up or a trip, compared on what decides it for most UK organisers: whether the players need an app, what it costs once the field is bigger than a four-ball, the formats, the handicaps, and what happens when the signal goes. We make score70, so every claim about the others is linked to its source, and score70’s gaps are listed as plainly as its strengths.

Do players need the app?No. Players open the link in the browser their phone already has.The organiser and whoever keeps score use the app. Players without it can be added as “unregistered players” and scored by someone else.[1]It is app-centred. The organiser can add and carry players who do not have the app installed.[2]Players are free and spectators can follow public boards without joining. Whether a player can score with no app or account, we could not confirm.[3]Yes. Every player is asked to download the app; the organiser can add guests instead.[4][5]
Cost for a 12 to 40 player dayFree. No plans, no player cap, no card. Nothing is held back for a paid tier, because there is no paid tier. The app is free. Gold is €59.99 a year or €19.99 a month after a 14-day trial, renewing automatically. The Gold page lists 20 formats, tournaments, Reds vs Blues and live leaderboards among its benefits; which of these are free is not fully clear from the page.[6]Free. Host Pro is an annual subscription; we could not confirm its price.[2]Free up to 8 players. Then $48 a year (16 players), $129 (32), $249 (64) or $449 (unlimited). Club plans are $99 to $549.[3]Tournaments are free. Premium is $99.99 a year.[7]

Who each one suits

  • score70

A page and a live leaderboard for one society, roll-up, trip or league, scored from every player’s own phone.

    • No app, no account. Players open one link and tap their name.
    • No subscription. Free, with no player cap and no card.
    • No ads. Not even a banner on the 18th.
    • No signal? Keep scoring. Scores wait on the phone and send themselves.

Not for you if you want GPS, a watch app or official score posting.

  • Golf GameBook

A social scorecard app with a feed, a large course list and a paid Gold tier.[14][6]

Suits you if you want one app for every round you play, with GPS, stats and a watch.

  • Squabbit

A free app for golf trips, tournaments and leagues, with an annual Host Pro tier.[2]

Suits you if your group is happy for everyone to install an app.

  • Golfify

An event builder on the web and in an app, free for up to 8 players.[3]

Suits you if you run small events of 8 or fewer, or are happy to pay for a bigger field.

  • 18Birdies

A golf app with free tournaments, where each player downloads the app and signs up or is added as a guest.[4][5]

Suits you if everyone in the group already uses 18Birdies for their own rounds.

Leaving Golf GameBook? There is a page for that: a Golf GameBook alternative for society golf.

What score70 does not do

  • No GPS, distances, shot tracking or watch app.
  • No official score posting: rounds do not go to England Golf or your WHS record.
  • No nearest-the-pin or longest-drive markers yet, no TV board yet.
  • No foursomes or greensomes yet.
  • Fewer courses than the big apps: more than 1,800 UK courses, with the card typed in for anywhere else.
  • No social feed, by design, and no push notifications.

How we checked

In October 2026 we read each product’s own web pages and help articles, its UK App Store and Google Play listings, and its most recent store reviews. We did not sign up for paid tiers, and we have not tested the other apps on a course, so where a page did not say something we have written “not documented” rather than guess. Some sites could not be read at all (Squabbit’s own site, for one), and their app store descriptions were used instead. Ratings and prices are as they stood on the day; they move.

Free, and nothing for the players to install

Try it on your next round

Make the organiser account, add the players and the course, and send one link to the group. Everyone else just taps their name.

Every statement above about another product comes from one of these pages, read on the date shown. Prices and features change; check the product’s own site before you decide. “Not documented” means we did not find it on the pages we read, not that it is missing.
