Texas scramble
One ball and one score a hole, the team playing its best shot every time, with one rule on top: every player’s drive has to be the one the team uses a minimum number of times.
- 2–4 players
- One ball
- One team
How it’s scored
- All four drive. The team picks one and taps whose drive it was. From there it is a scramble: everyone plays from the best ball, one score a hole.
- Each player’s drive must be used at least the minimum: three each for a four over 18, five each for a three, seven each for a pair. Over nine holes, two, three or four.
- The team handicap is the scramble’s: 25% of the lowest course handicap, then 20%, 15% and 10%, off the finished total to a tenth.
- The app keeps the drive count on the card and warns when someone is running out of holes. It never throws a card out: what a missed drive costs is the group’s call.

- Doyle4 ✓
- Taylor2 of 3
- Hartley1 of 3
Six holes left. Taylor needs one more drive and Hartley two, so three of the six are spoken for.
- Ellis7 ✓
- Doyle5 ✓
- Taylor3 ✓
- Hartleyneeds 2, 2 holes left
Two holes left and Hartley still needs two: both remaining drives have to be his, whatever he hits.
Handicaps
The same team number as a scramble: 10, 12, 16 and 20 make 2.5 + 2.4 + 2.4 + 2.0 = 9.3. The drive rule changes whose ball is played, not the handicap.

The fine print
How many drives each in a Texas scramble?
Three each for a team of four over 18 holes is the usual society rule and the app’s default; five each for a three and seven each for a pair. Over nine holes it is two, three or four. Your club plays a different number? Change it on the round. It cannot go higher than the holes allow, because a hole has only one drive to give.
What happens if someone is short of drives?
The card still counts. Each player’s chip on the card shows how many drives they have of how many they need; it turns to “needs 2, 2 holes left” when every remaining drive has to be theirs, and the board marks the team “drives short” once the rule can no longer be met. What that costs is for the group to decide, not the app.
Is the handicap different from a normal scramble?
No. The team handicap is the same 25/20/15/10 per cent of the members’ course handicaps, lowest first, taken off the finished total to a tenth. A team of three plays off 30/20/10 and a pair off 35/15.
Do we have to tap the drive on every hole?
Tap whose drive the team used and the app keeps the count. A hole scored without a drive is not held against anybody: the card asks for it, and it can be put right later in the round.
