How it works

From an empty page to a settled trip

Six steps. Three of them happen at the kitchen table before you fly, two happen with a phone in your back pocket, and the last one happens in the bar. Here is exactly what the app does at each of them.

The organiser is the only person who needs an account. Everybody else just opens the link.

Setting up is typing, and most of it only ever happens once. Next year the roster and the courses are still there.

Step 1 of 6

Start a comp

Name the trip, say what kind of trip it is, and pick its web address. Just rounds, a Ryder Cup between two teams, or two to eight teams on points — the choice sets up the teams and puts the right board first on every phone. The name suggests the address, you can overtype it, and the app tells you there and then whether it is free. From that moment the trip is somewhere rather than something — a link you paste into the group chat once and never think about again.

  • Just rounds, Ryder Cup, or teams on points — pick one, and the teams are made for you.
  • Lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, checked as you type.
  • The address can still be changed right up until the first round is played.
  • Share it straight out to WhatsApp, or copy it if you are on a laptop.

Step 2 of 6

Add the players and the courses

Players go in once, with a handicap index each, on a roster that is shared across trips. Courses want a little more: slope rating, course rating, par, and a stroke index for all eighteen holes. Search the catalogue and they arrive in one tap; anything else is copied off the card. One course can hold several sets of tees, each with its own ratings, because to a handicap they are different golf courses.

  • A handicap index per player, editable whenever somebody has a good month.
  • A per-trip cut, in half shots, for the one everybody knows is off too much.
  • Search the course catalogue - Belek, Gloucester, Minchinhampton - and add a course in one tap, ratings and all.

Set up the day

Pick the course, the tees, the format and who is playing. The app turns every handicap index into a course handicap for that exact set of tees, then hands out the shots hole by hole down the stroke index. Stableford plays off the full handicap; a four-ball takes 90% of the gap to the lowest player, so the low man is never cut for being good.

  • Stableford, singles match play, pairs four-ball better-ball, lowest gross, a shamble, a 1-2-3, blind pairs, a mystery player, Russian roulette or a yellow ball — every one of them scored off the same card.
  • Or a scramble — standard, Ambrose or Florida — one number a hole for the team, off a team handicap.
  • Several matches on the same day, with a warning if somebody is in two of them.
  • The allowance is a field, so a group with a house rule can overrule the default.

This is the part that has to work on a hillside with one bar of signal and a glove on.

Score on the tee

Everyone scores from their own phone, one hole at a time. Tap the score and birdie, par, bogey and double are one tap away; the plus and minus cover everything else. Under each name sit the shots that player gets on this hole and what the score is worth, worked out as you go.

  • Every tap is written to the phone first, then sent — in that order.
  • No signal is not a failure. The score queues on the handset and replays itself when the bars come back, when you reopen the app, or when you tap Retry.
  • Open a round once with signal and that phone can show it again without any.

Watch it live

A score tapped in on the 7th shows up on every other phone in the group. The same board is open to whoever stayed by the pool, and to the ones who did not come at all — it is a web page, not an app anybody has to be talked through installing.

  • Any score, on any phone, refreshes the board on all of them.
  • It catches up on its own when a phone is picked back up or comes back online.
  • Anything still queued is ringed on the card, so nobody reads a total that is missing two holes.

Settle it

The leaderboard carries the whole trip, not just today: the running stableford table, the team match points, the singles and pairs results, and a birdie count. Switch skins on and they get a board of their own: holes won, holes that roll over when nobody wins them, and a value per hole if your group puts one on. Then there are the stats, which exist for no reason other than to end arguments.

  • Seven boards: Ryder Cup or team standings, stableford, match play, pairs, gross, birdies.
  • Round of the trip, biggest comeback, hardest hole, bounce-back rate, sandbagger index.
  • Share the day as text and it lands in the group chat readable, not as a screenshot of a table.

It is a scorer. It will not book your tee times, it will not tell you the yardage, and it will not collect the money at the end of the week — you will have to do that in person, like an adult.
