Bowmaker (and Bowmaker reversed)
Four play their own stableford as one team, and each hole’s par decides how many of their scores count: the best one on a par 5, the best two on a par 4, the best three on a par 3. Reversed turns it round.
- 2–4 players
- Own ball
- One team
How it’s scored
- Everyone plays their own ball and scores stableford points off their own handicap.
- Bowmaker: the best 1 score counts on a par 5, the best 2 on a par 4, the best 3 on a par 3.
- Bowmaker reversed: the best 1 on a par 3, the best 2 on a par 4, the best 3 on a par 5.
- The team total is the counting scores added up; several teams on the day are ranked on the Bowmaker board.
Worked · one team of four, holes 1–4, both ways round
Reversed, the same four cards: 1 on a par 3, 2 on a par 4, 3 on a par 5
Team 18 reversed, against 19 the standard way round.

The fine print
What if the team is short?
Every card the team has counts where the par asks for more. A two-ball on a par 3 counts both its scores, not two and a nought, and the card and the board say so. When other teams that day are bigger, Even up teams rests one of each bigger team a hole in turn, so every team counts the same.
What about a par 6, or a card with no par?
A par 6 counts as a par 5 (one in Bowmaker, three reversed) and a par 2 as a par 3. A hole with no par counts two. The count is always one, two or three.
What happens with a blob?
A pick-up is an X worth nothing and is the first score dropped. If the par asks for every card, it costs the team the hole.
When does a hole count?
Once every card in the team is in. Your own card still goes on the stableford and birdie boards as usual.
Is it the same as 1-2-3?
The same idea, counted by par instead of by hole number. Bowmaker reversed scores like a 1-2-3 set to “By par”, except on a par 6.
