Questions and answers

Your questions, answered

What to tap, in plain words. Pick a topic.

Getting going

  • Do I need an account?

No. Only the person who organises the game needs one. Everyone else taps the link they were sent and picks their name.

    1. Tap the link from the email or your WhatsApp group.
    2. When it asks “Who’s holding this phone?”, tap your name.
    3. That’s it. You can see the scores and enter them.

An account is optional for players. It puts your name on the scores you enter and keeps your rounds across every group: More, then “Create an account”.

  • Do I need to download anything?

No. score70 runs in your phone’s web browser, so there is nothing to install and nothing to update. Open the link and it works.

Want an icon on your phone? See below: you can add it to your home screen.

Add it to your home screen
  • Is it free?

Yes. There is no charge for organisers or players, no limit on players or rounds, and no adverts.

    Read why it’s free
  • Who can see our scores?

Only people with your group’s link. A new group is Private, so it can only be opened from the invite link the organiser shares, and groups are kept out of Google.

    1. Organisers can check this on Players, under “Invite the group”: tap “How private is this?”.
    2. If the link has gone somewhere it shouldn’t, tap “Reset invite link”. The old link stops working and you share the new one.
  • Can I use it on a tablet or computer?

Yes. It works in any web browser: phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. It is laid out for a phone, so on a bigger screen it sits in the middle. Many organisers set up the day on a computer and score on their phone.

  • How do I add it to my home screen?

Open your group’s link once, then use your browser’s own menu. You then get a score70 icon that opens straight to your group.

    1. iPhone (Safari): tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), then Add to Home Screen, then Add.
    2. Android (Chrome): tap the three dots at the top right, then Add to Home screen or Install app.

Handicaps

  • What if we just want playing handicaps, or a handicap we agree ourselves?

You can do this through fixed handicaps on the Handicaps tab. Everyone then plays off the number you give them, on every course and every tee, and off half of it on 9 holes. Index changes and course ratings don’t move it.

    1. Tap “Handicaps” at the bottom of the screen (it says “Hcps” on a small phone).
    2. In the card “How handicaps work…”, tap “Fixed handicaps”. In a league it says “Fixed league handicaps”.
    3. To start from everyone’s current numbers, tap “Fill from…”, pick “Handicap index” or a course handicap, then tap Fill.
    4. Tap “Change” beside a player, type their number (18, or +2 for a plus handicap) and tap “Save”.

Only an organiser can change these. The numbers are used as they are: the full difference in a match, the full number in Stableford. Anyone without a number yet plays off their course handicap.

  • How are handicaps worked out?

The World Handicap System way. Your handicap index becomes a course handicap from the tee’s slope rating, course rating and par, and your shots go on by stroke index. score70 does the sums; you only need each player’s index.

    1. To see everyone’s numbers, tap “Handicaps” and pick the “Course” and “Tees”.
    2. To see who gives whom shots, use the “Your match” card on the same page.

  • What handicap allowance is used?

Each game starts on its usual allowance: Net medal 95%, Pairs (4BBB) and Sixes 90% of the difference, Shamble 85%, and the full handicap for Stableford and most team games. The scrambles use a team handicap. You can change the percentage for any game except Stableford when you set up the day.

    1. On Set up the day, look on the match card for “Handicap allowance” (in a match it says “Shots off the lowest handicap”).
    2. Type the percentage you want.

Stableford is always played off the full course handicap, so a 95% Stableford isn’t possible yet. Tell us via “Send feedback” if you’d like it.

  • Can I change someone’s handicap for one round?

Yes, when you set up the day. It changes that round only; their handicap on Players stays as it was.

    1. On Set up the day, find the player on the match card.
    2. Tap their handicap chip (it has a pencil and says Course HCP) and type the number for today.
    3. Already started? Open the round, tap the pencil (“Edit round”) under “Round status”, change it there and tap “Save changes”.

For a cut or extra shots that lasts the whole trip, tap the player on Players and use “Adjust for this trip”.

  • Does score70 send my scores to England Golf or my WHS record?

No. score70 doesn’t submit scores anywhere, so nothing you play here changes your handicap index. If a round should count for your handicap, submit it through your club or the England Golf app as usual.

Organising

  • How do I set up a roll-up?

Create the group once, add the players and the course, then set up each day. The first time takes about ten minutes; after that, a new day takes two.

    1. Go to score70.com and tap “Create your trip page”. Make your account.
    2. Under “Your group”, type its name, e.g. Saturday Roll-up. Add a “Name for this game or trip”, pick “Weekly season” for a regular roll-up, and tap “Create and get the link”.
    3. On Players, add your players (see the next answer), then tap “Next: set up the day”.
    4. Pick the course, the game and the groups, then tap “Start round”.
    5. Send the link: on Players, under “Invite the group”, tap “Share trip link”.
    The full step-by-step guide
  • How do I add players quickly?

Paste a list, or upload the club’s members file. You don’t have to type them one at a time.

    1. Open Players and tap “Paste a list”.
    2. Paste one player a line with the handicap last, like “Jim Doyle 14”. Then tap the Add button: it counts them for you, e.g. Add 15 players.
    3. Got a spreadsheet from the club system? Tap “Upload a members file (CSV or Excel)” instead.
    4. Next month, “Update handicaps from a file” brings everyone’s index up to date.
  • How do I split everyone into fourballs and tee times?

On Set up the day, each card is a group. Set the first tee time and the gap, and the groups are named Group 1 · 8:30, Group 2 · 8:38 and so on.

    1. Tap Rounds, then “New round”. Under “The day”, tap “Change”, set the “First tee” and how many minutes apart (“Every”).
    2. Tap “Draw groups” to make fours (with a three-ball if the numbers don’t divide), at random or balanced by handicap.
    3. Have the club’s tee sheet? Tap “Import tee sheet”, paste it in, check the names and tap “Use these groups”.
    4. Or tap “Add another group” and pick each group yourself. Then tap “Start 3 groups” (it counts them).

Setting up a later day? The button says Save instead of Start, e.g. Save Saturday’s 3 groups.

  • How do I play the same again next week?

Tap “Same as last week” at the top of Set up the day. It copies last week’s game, course, groups and tee times, and sets the date to the same day next week.

    1. Tap Rounds, then “New round”.
    2. Tap “Same as last week” (it shows last week’s date). Swap anyone who isn’t playing, then tap Start, or Save for a day still to come.
    3. Always play the same game? Set it up once and tap “Save as a house rule”. It is then one tap under “Your house rules”.
  • Can someone else help organise?

Yes, and it’s a good idea, so the group isn’t tied to one phone. Make them an organiser from the Players page.

    1. Open Players and scroll to “Organisers”. Tap “Make someone an organiser”.
    2. If they have a score70 account, tap “Make organiser” by their name.
    3. If not, tap “Invite link” and send it to them. They sign up and they’re in.
  • How do I run a season or league table?

Keep playing in the same group and the Leaderboard adds the weeks up. A season counts each player’s best 10 rounds unless you choose otherwise.

    1. Starting a new group? Under “One-off game or trip, or a weekly season?”, tap “Weekly season”.
    2. Already running? On the Leaderboard, tap “Boards” and set “It’s a” to “Season”.
    3. To change how many count, tap “Counting” on the Stableford tab and pick, e.g., “Best 5” or “All rounds”.
    4. For pairs or teams that play each other through the season, open “Weekly pairs or league teams” on Set up the day.
  • What if we missed entering a week?

An organiser can put it in afterwards from the paper cards, hole by hole or just the totals. It goes on the table like any other week, marked as entered afterwards.

    1. Open Rounds and tap “Add a missed week” (under the weeks).
    2. Check the date: it starts on an earlier day, not today. Pick the course and who played, then “Hole by hole” or “Totals only”.
    3. Tap “Next: type in the cards” (or the totals) and type them in.

Totals only counts on the table, but not for skins, birdies or the eclectic, because there are no holes.

Courses

  • Is my course on it?

Almost certainly. score70 has over 2,000 courses across the UK and Ireland with their pars, stroke indexes and ratings. Gloucester Golf Club is on it, with the White, Yellow, Red and Winter tees.

    1. On Set up the day, under “Where are you playing?”, type the club’s name and tap the course.
    2. Not there? Tap “Add it from the scorecard” and type it in from the club’s card.
  • What if our tees or ratings are wrong?

Tell us and we’ll fix the card for everyone. An organiser can also correct your group’s own copy straight away.

    1. Open Courses and tap the tee, e.g. Yellow.
    2. Tap “Something wrong with this card?”. Your email opens with the details filled in; say what the club’s card says and send it.
    3. To fix your own copy now, change the rating, slope or hole and save.

Once rounds have been played on a tee, its pars and stroke indexes are locked so old results don’t change. Use the “Add tee” chips to make a corrected copy.

  • Can ladies play off the ladies’ tees in a mixed group?

Yes. Mark the ladies once, and when you set up the day they go on the women’s tee (usually Red) with the women’s ratings, par and stroke index. At Gloucester the Yellow, Red and Winter tees all have women’s ratings.

    1. Once per player: on Players, tap her name and under “Man or woman?” tap “Woman”. Pasting a list? Put a W after her handicap.
    2. Set up the day as usual. The group’s card says who is on which tee; tap Change to move anyone.
    3. Nobody marked yet? The card asks “Any ladies in this group?”: tap “Tap to set”, then tap each lady. It’s saved for next time.

In a medal or match, a player on a higher-par card gets the difference in extra shots, as the rules say. Stableford needs nothing extra.

  • Can we play 9 holes?

Yes. Pick the front or back nine when you set up the day, and handicaps are halved the WHS way.

    1. On Set up the day, choose the course, then tap “Front 9” or “Back 9” instead of “18 holes”.
    2. Only one player stopping at 9? Open “Anyone only playing 9 holes?” on their match card and set them there.

On the course

  • Can one person score for the whole group?

Yes. Every player in the group has a row, and any phone can score any of them. Many groups have one scorer and the rest just watch the Leaderboard.

    1. Open Rounds and tap your group.
    2. Tap a player’s score once for par, then use − or + to change it.
    3. When everyone’s in, tap “Hole 1 done · Next hole”.

If it says “Just watching”, tap “Score for someone”. Two phones scoring the same player? The latest tap wins.

  • Can I make the numbers and buttons bigger?

Yes. Big scoring mode makes the scores and buttons much larger. score70 also follows your phone’s own text size.

    1. On the scorecard, tap “Big” (the magnifier) at the top, or “Bigger text and buttons” under the players.
    2. Pick a “Text size” if you want it bigger still. Tap “Normal size” to go back.
  • What if I lose signal?

Keep scoring. Every tap is saved on your phone and sent by itself when you get a bar of signal again. Nothing is lost.

    1. Open the group’s link once before you go out, with signal or Wi-Fi.
    2. On the course, carry on as normal. The strip at the top says how many scores are waiting to send.
  • What if my phone dies?

Anyone else in the group can carry on scoring on their phone: open the link, find the group and score from the hole you’re on. Scores your phone had already sent are safe. Any it hadn’t sent yet go when it’s charged and opened again.

  • What if I made a mistake on a hole?

Just change it. The newest score always wins.

    1. Just tapped it? Tap “Undo”.
    2. An earlier hole? Tap its number in the strip of holes, then use − or +.
    3. Round already finished? Ask an organiser to “Reopen” it.
  • What if someone has to leave mid-round?

An organiser can stop scoring them and keep the holes they played. The rest of the group carries on, and the round finishes as normal without waiting for them.

    1. Open the round, tap the pencil (“Edit round”) under “Round status”, then tap their name to take them off.
    2. Tap the big “Stop scoring” button (it says, e.g., Stop scoring Paul – keep the 3 holes), then “Save changes”.
    3. Their row on the other phones says they were taken off. Their holes still count for skins and birdies, but a part card doesn’t go on the Stableford table.

Knew before they teed off? Set them to “Front 9” under “Anyone only playing 9 holes?” and they get a proper 9-hole card.

  • What’s a blob, or a pick-up?

A blob is a hole where you score no Stableford points, so you can pick up your ball. On the card it shows as an X, worth nothing.

    1. Tap + until the points line shows the X (0 pts).
    2. When it says “No need to count further — any more is still 0 pts”, stop.

In a medal every stroke counts, so put in your real score. A pick-up there is a no return.

  • How do I sign the card?

When every hole is in, finish the round. score70 lays out each card like the paper one for you to check and sign.

    1. Tap “All 18 holes in — Finish round” (or “Finish round” at the bottom, under “Round status”).
    2. Under “Who’s signing?”, tap the marker’s name. Tap any hole to fix it.
    3. Tap “Confirm and finish”. It says “Round finished”; tap “See the leaderboard”.

Signing works with no signal. Finishing needs a bar, and waits for any scores still on the phone.

Games

  • What games can we play?

Over twenty: Stableford, medal and net medal, match play, four-ball better-ball, Texas scramble, 1-2-3 (Cha Cha Cha), Irish Rumble, Bowmaker, Russian roulette, Sixes, Vegas and more. Each one has a page with the rules and a worked example.

    1. On Set up the day, under “The day”, tap “Change” and pick the game. They’re grouped as “Individual”, “Your group as one team”, “Pair v pair”, “One ball” and “Head to head”.
    See every game
  • Can we play two games at once, like Stableford and skins?

Yes. Everyone’s Stableford is counted from the same card whatever the day’s game, and boards such as Skins and Eclectic run alongside it.

    1. On the Leaderboard, tap “Boards” and switch on “Skins” or “Eclectic”.
    2. One group playing something different? On its match card, tap “Different game for this group”.
  • Can we play team games or a Ryder Cup?

Yes. Make the teams on Players, then either play matches between them (a Ryder Cup) or add up everyone’s points (a team day).

    1. Open Players, tap “Add teams” and pick how many. They are drawn fairly on handicap.
    2. Ryder Cup: on the Leaderboard tap “Boards”, switch on “Ryder Cup”, then set up “Match Play” or “Pairs (4BBB)” matches between the teams.
    3. Team day: on Set up the day, switch on “Team day” and pick the “Points that count each hole”.

Privacy and your data

  • What do you keep about me?

Your name, handicap index and scores, as your organiser entered them, and the courses you played. If you make an account, your email too. Nothing is sold, and there is no advertising.

    1. To have your name taken off a group, ask the organiser: they can remove it.
    2. Signed in? My account, then “Download my data” gives you a copy of everything.
    Read the privacy notice
  • How do I delete my account?

From My account. Your account and email go straight away. Scores you entered stay with the group, with no account attached, so everyone else’s results don’t change.

    1. Tap More, then “My account”.
    2. Scroll down and tap “Delete account”.
    3. Type your password and tap “Delete my account”.

No account? Then there is nothing to delete: ask your organiser to take your name off the group.

  • Will my name appear in course records?

Only if you choose to. It is off for everyone until they switch it on, and you can switch it off again at any time.

    1. Sign in, then tap More, then “My account”.
    2. Find “Course records” and switch on “Show me in my club’s course records”.
