Scramble

One ball: everyone hits, the team picks the best, everyone plays from there — one score a hole for the team, net of a team handicap.

  • 2–4 players
  • One ball
  • One team

How it’s scored

  1. One number a hole, tapped by whoever is holding the phone. No individual cards.
  2. The team handicap is 25% of the lowest course handicap, 20% of the next, then 15% and 10%.
  3. It comes off the total at the end, to a tenth: 63 gross less 9.3 is 53.7 net.
  4. Read as strokes under par, gross and net, the way a scramble reads anywhere.

25% of 10 + 20% of 12 + 15% of 16 + 10% of 20 = 2.5 + 2.4 + 2.4 + 2.0 = 9.3

Handicaps

A team number, not shots on holes: with one ball there is nobody to give a shot to. 10, 12, 16 and 20 make 2.5 + 2.4 + 2.4 + 2.0 = 9.3.

The fine print

Why is net only shown at the end?

A tenth of a shot cannot be dealt out hole by hole without inventing a rounding rule, so the team handicap comes off the finished total. A 14-hole net is a shorter round, not a score.

Does a scramble day count for the stableford?

No. Nobody has their own card, so nobody has stableford, birdies or skins from it: a scramble day lives on the Scramble board and your order-of-merit numbers are what they were the night before.

Texas scramble?

A Texas scramble adds a minimum number of drives from each player. The app takes only the score for now, so the drive count is the group’s rule to keep on the tee; the scoring and the team handicap are the same.
