Singles match play

One against one, hole by hole on net score: lower wins the hole, level halves it, and the score is holes up.

How it’s scored

  1. Each hole is won, lost or halved. A nine costs exactly one hole, same as a bogey.
  2. The score is holes up with holes to play: 2 UP, A/S, 1 DOWN.
  3. The match is over when one player is more holes up than there are left — 4&3 is four up with three to play.
  4. Level after the last is All Square, half a point each in a cup.

Handicaps

The lower player plays off scratch and the other gets the full difference: 20 against 10 is ten shots, down the stroke index.

The fine print

Why does the match stop at 4&3?

Four up with three to play cannot be caught, so the app closes it out on the fifteenth green and writes it up as 4&3 rather than waiting for eighteen scores. The last three holes are never played for the match; the cards still score stableford.

What if it is all square after 18?

A half. In a Ryder Cup that is half a point to each side. There is no sudden death unless your group plays one; the app records what the cards say.

Where do the shots fall?

By stroke index: ten shots is a shot on S.I. 1 to 10. The percentage is of the gap between the two players, never of each handicap, so the lower player is never cut for being good.
